Jelena Jankovic ends season as #1
23 year old Serbian tennis star Jelena Jankovic will end the season ranked #1 by the WTA. Despite not winning a major all season, she managed to rack up 4,555 points, guaranteeing her the top spot at the seasons end. Jankovic said:
“It has been a truly amazing year for me. I worked really hard this year, and to finish No. 1 is where I want to be and where I hope to stay.”
Jankovic climbed to the No. 1 ranking for the first time this year on August 11, but was only able to hold on to it for one week. She reclaimed the top spot on October 6 after winning at Stuttgart.
Born Feb. 28, 1985 in Belgrade, Serbia, the 5′9″ 130 lb. Jankovic has been playing tennis professionally since 2000. She has won four titles this year, putting her career total at nine. She also has one career doubles title to her name. Over the past eight years, she has earned $6,140,935 in prize money and has a record of 328-169. Jankovic reached the semis of both the Australian and French Opens this year, and played in the finals of the US Open, where she lost to Serena Williams.
