NADAL OFF TO SHAKY START

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

NEW YORK: Olympic champion Rafael Nadal showed his mettle at the US Open, overcoming early challenges to win early this morning in the start of what's expected to be a wide-open tournament.

Playing for the first time as the world No 1, Nadal swatted his very first shot wide against No 136 Bjorn Phau.

The Wimbledon and French Open champ was two points from dropping the first set when he surged and, despite needing to bandage a nasty blister, won 7-6 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Nadal got much more of a test from the German qualifier than many anticipated, and shook his head near the end of a match that lasted nearly three hours.

World number 136 Phau held his own in the opening set against the game's leading player before losing the tiebreak 7-4 but was swept aside in the second in 46 minutes.

Andy Murray of Britain defeated Sergio Roitman of Argentina 6-3, 6-4, 6-0. No 32 Gael Monfils downed Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.

Nadal, this year's French Open and Wimbledon champion, surprisingly double-faulted when serving for the match at 5-4 in the third before winning the tiebreak 7-4.

Roger Federer, bidding for his fifth straight US Open title, was scheduled to begin today, as were No 1 Ana Ivanovic and the Williams sisters.

The final Grand Slam event of the season was expected to be a scramble on both sides.

Federer has won at least one grand-slam event every year since 2003 and though he said he was feeling less pressure this time, he admitted it would be tough.

"I think I need the (crowd) support a little bit this year," he said.

"(But) I still believe it's an advantage if you know how to win a US Open. It's a tough tournament to win."

Also desperate to stop Nadal is Novak Djokovic, aiming to reproduce his Australian Open form and win his second grand-slam title of 2008.

Djokovic, runner-up to Federer last year, took his maiden grand-slam title in Australia in January.

After an early loss at Wimbledon, the Serbian reached the final in Cincinnati and won bronze at the Olympics.

Nadal seems like the natural favourite, yet has never gone beyond the quarterfinals in five previous tries at Flushing Meadows.

The 22-year-old Spanish dynamo took a while to find his rhythm against Phau, whose spirited play made him a crowd favourite.

Fans at Arthur Ashe Stadium, often quiet during early daytime sessions, cheered when Phau dived for a shot, rolled over on his back and chased a return.

Fourth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain beat Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina 7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-2. No 29-seeded Juan Monaco of Argentina lost to Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-2, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Also winning were No 7 David Nalbandian of Argentina, No 10 Stanislas Wawrinka and No 16 Gilles Simon of France.

NATALIE PORTMAN BIOGRAPHY

NATALIE PORTMAN BIOGRAPHY

Natalie Portman was born on June 9, 1981, in Jerusalem, Israel. The daughter of an infertility specialist and an artist, Natalie (who uses her grandmother's maiden name in order to protect her privacy) left Israel at the age of 3 and relocated with her family to Maryland, Connecticut, and finally to Long Island, New York, where her parents still reside.

Discovered by a modeling scout at a New York pizza parlor at the age of 11, Natalie was not motivated by modeling and wanted to find a more fulfilling job. Although she had no initial desire to become an actress, Natalie developed an interest in performing after attending the Stagedoor Manor Performing Camp for three summers.

Her first acting experiences came from her summers at Stagedoor Manor, where she was cast in theater performances of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Cabaret, Anne of Green Gables (in the title role), and Tapestry.

Natalie in the professional

Natalie's film career started with her role in the 1994 film, The Professional (a.k.a. Leon), as a hit-man's protégée. The following year, she appeared in the crime-drama Heat, alongside heavy hitters Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, and was noticed in the 1996 film, Beautiful Girls, stealing the screen from another beautiful actress, Uma Thurman.

Her role in Beautiful Girls garnered rave reviews for Natalie, and that same year she could be seen in the Woody Allen star-studded musical, Everyone Says I Love You, as well as Mars Attacks!

After having turned down roles in movies like Lolita (due to her feeling that young actors should not be exposed to sex at such a young age) and the role of Juliet in William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet (because of the age difference between Portman and Leonardo DiCaprio), Natalie refused the supporting role in The Horse Whisperer, opting instead to star as Anne Frank in the Broadway production of The Diary of Anne Frank. She was nominated for a Tony award for her performance.

Natalie in Star wars

But the role that turned Natalie into more than a Broadway/film actress is that of Queen Padmé Amidala, in the first Star Wars prequel. Her three-film contract, which started with 1999's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, has transformed her into a historic film character. Ironically, Natalie had never even seen the original three Star Wars movies before being cast by George Lucas.

Natalie's graduation from Syosset High School took place the same summer that the much-hyped prequel was released.

After her role in Phantom Menace, Natalie co-starred with Susan Sarandon in Anywhere But Here (1999), and starred in the lead role alongside Ashley Judd in the film adaptation of Where the Heart Is (2000).

Natalie in Closer

Her next projects were Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002), Cold Mountain (2003), Garden State (2004), and True (2004). In 2004, she wowed audiences in Closer, co-starring Jude Law, Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. She took home a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress (in Closer) and was nominated for an Academy Award in the same category for this role.

Trilingual (Natalie speaks Hebrew, English and Japanese) and having aspirations of becoming a doctor, Natalie studied psychology at Harvard University and is currently studying at Hebrew University in Jerusalem while filming Free Zone (due for release in 2005). In 2005, she will also appear as Senator Amidala/Padmé Naberrie-Skywalker in the third installment of the Star Wars prequel series, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

Her other 2005 credits include V for Vendetta, The Smoker and Paris, je t'aime.

Often referred to as "the new Audrey Hepburn," Natalie surely has a bright film career ahead of her... if she decides to remain an actress, that is.

Venus Williams

Friday, July 18, 2008

Biography

After seeing how large the prize money was for tennis champions in comparison to the salary he was making, Richard Williams vowed to send his children on the path to success by learning the game. Two years later, in 1980, Venus Ebone Starr Williams was born in Lynwood, California. By the time she was four, Venus was brought to the two rundown public courts in Watts and Compton by her father, to hit cratefuls of tennis balls for hours on end.

It was immediately evident that Venus had more than just an interest in the game her father encouraged her to play -- she was incredible at it. In 1988, a young Pete Sampras and John McEnroe visited the child prodigy and hit some balls with her. Even at eight years old, Venus was confident, claiming she could have beaten McEnroe if the bounces had gone her way.

young and famous

Despite showing flashes of brilliance in track (posting a 5:29 mile at the early age of eight) and some regrets by her father after seeing the lengths many parents went to in order to further their children's careers, Venus kept up her tennis training. As she conquered her opponents in exhibition matches, The New York Times published an article about her, paving the way for a career full of fame.

When Venus was 12 years old, Richard Williams pulled her and her younger sister Serena, out of their respective junior circuits and moved them to Florida. There they attended Rick Macci's Tennis Academy, practicing six hours a day, six days a week, for four straight years. As their time at the academy ended, Venus turned pro and won her first match in Oakland at the age of fourteen.

a teen millionaire

After playing in only one pro tournament, the hyping up of Venus Williams continued as she signed a five-year, $12 million contract with Reebok in 1995. She made her first big splash on the Women's Tennis Association tour in 1997 after becoming the first unseeded finalist at the U.S. Open since 1968. Although she lost in straight sets to rival Martina Hingis, fans knew Venus would be in that familiar setting for many years to come.

Just before beating sister Serena in their first match against each other as pros in the second round of the 1998 Australian Open, Venus graduated from the exclusive Driftwood Academy, proving she has brains as well as brawn. Three months later, Williams scored her first title at the IGA Tennis Classic in Oklahoma City, and teamed up with Serena to win the doubles title there too -- the first for the unstoppable Williams sisters.

on a whole new high

Venus saw even more results of consistent hard work as her career matured, winning the competitive Lipton Championships in 1999 against her sister and the French Open title alongside her. There were some bumps in the road, however, as it was Serena who won the first of the family's Grand Slam championships, beating Hingis at the U.S. Open in 1999. Venus also suffered various injuries that sparked rumors of an impending retirement.

The naysayers were quieted after Venus returned from a five-month hiatus in 2000 and throttled Lindsay Davenport at Wimbledon to capture her first of the big titles. Amazingly, she followed this up with a singles and doubles gold medal sweep at the Olympics in Sydney, then simply destroyed the rest of the field in the U.S. Open for back-to-back championship wins (making history once again as the second player to win Wimbledon, the Olympics and the U.S. Open in the same year). These accomplishments motivated Sports Illustrated to award her with the title of "Sportswoman of the Year" in 2000.

a sweet repeat

2001 was practically a case of déjà vu, as Venus once again won in England and Flushing Meadows, New York. This time, she beat her sister Serena for the U.S. title in straight sets. Unfortunately for fans of Venus, Serena got her revenge three times over in 2002, as the younger Williams sister defeated her elder three consecutive times to capture the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Despite this competitive atmosphere, Venus always remains proud of her sister and more motivated than ever to maintain the stranglehold on the history-making number one and two rankings they occupy.

venus aims for the stars

With blockbuster endorsement deals from the likes of Reebok (her $40 million, five-year deal makes her the most highly endorsed female athlete ever), Wrigley and Sega (the latter two are with Serena), her own interior design company "V Star Interiors," an upcoming associate's degree in fashion design, and 28 career singles titles, Venus is no ordinary 22-year-old.

Her dominance on the court and vibrant personality make her a great role model as she makes history with equally impressive sister Serena. With revenge on her mind next season as she failed to taste big-time victory in 2002, we simply can't wait for the next Venus/Serena final.
