Sania Mirza, Sunitha Rao Get Wild Card For Beijing Olympics

women's doubles tennis event of the Beijing Olympics will have Indian participants too as Sania Mirza and Sunitha Rao has been provided a Wild card entry to participate in the quadrennial extravaganza that kick starts on August 8. Sania Mirza happens to be the number one woman tennis player in India, whereas Sunitha Rao, who is based in the United States, is the second highest ranked Indian in the WTA charts. Rao has played for India in the Fed Cup. An official confirmation regarding this has been received from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), stated a high ranked officer from the All India Tennis Association (AITA).

 

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) officer said, ‘We got a letter from the ITF recently saying Sania and Sunitha, who were AITA nominations, have been approved a wild card entry for the women's doubles competition.’ As far as Sania Mirza is concerned, she already has been provided a direct entry into the singles event. It is from August 10 to August 17 that the tennis event will be played at the new Olympic tennis centre in Beijing. The women’s doubles event will see participation of players from 21 nations.
