New Delhi, July 16 With no time left for Beijing, the 400m athlete says the sponsorship can help her prepare for 2010
National record-holder quartermiler Manjeet Kaur has resumed training for the Beijing Olympics, having recovered completely from the hamstring injury she had sustained about a month back.
“I am back to rigourous training sessions,” Manjeet told The Indian Express on Tuesday on the sidelines of a felicitation fuction in the Capital. “I’m physically fit now.”
The Punjab runner has made the Olympics in the women’s 400m and 4x400m relay categories. She has been a key member of the Indian relay squad since the Athens Olympics.
However, the injury she sustained during a domestic event in June prevented her from participating in the Asian Grand Prix series in Bangkok and Vietnam, where the relay squad qualified for the Olympics. However, Manjeet made the cut, courtesy her IAAF ranking.
Manjeet and several other Beijing-bound athletes are leaving on Wednesday night for advance training in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the Games. On her chances at the Olympics, Manjeet said it was going to tough, but she would do well. Although she had got a sponsor for her Beijing preparations, it came a little too late and she was not able to avail the funds to train in the US.
“The funds came too late and I couldn’t train abroad. But the money will help me prepare for big competitions in 2009 and 2010 Commonwealth Games,” the Doha Asian Games gold medallist said.
JJ Shobha (heptathlete), Renjith Maheswary (triple jump), Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose, MR Poovamma and Chitra K Soman (all members of relay team) are also leaving for the Malaysian capital on Wednesday.Discus thrower Harwant Kaur will join them later.
