Paes-Dlouhy in US Open quarters

NEW DELHI: Past months have been a roller coaster ride for Indian ace tennis player Leander Paes. It all started with an unceremonious exit in the men's doubles at the Bejing Olympics. After much fuss, Lee paired with Mahesh Bhupathi only to bow out in the quarters where Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka tamed the Indians 6-2, 6-4. Paes also stepped down as the Davis Cup captain, ending a tumultous two-year reign that saw a players' revolt against him in February. So amidst all this, while the nation had little expectations from Lee to have any success at the US Open, the Indian ace has done it again. Partnering Czech Lukas Dlouhy, Leander Paes has made it to the quarter-finals of the US Open. Paes' best performance with Dlouhy this year at the Grand Slams has been making the semi-finals at Wimbledon and his performances at the Australian and French have been less than impressive. At the US Open they have had to work hard to get to the last eight. In the first round they battled to score a three-set win over the Spanish combine of Oscar Hernandez and Albert Montanes. They then overcame a second set lapse to quell the challenge of Eduardo Schwank of Argentina and Potito Starace of Italy 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in their second round. And in the 3rd round they comprehensively beat Rik De Voest and Ashley Fisher 6-3, 6-3. The stakes are high for Leander after some disappointing performances this year and he will be hoping to end the final Grand Slam on a high. |
