Leander Paes moves on to US Open semi's as Mahesh Bhupathi crashes out |
Mahesh Bhupathi has been India's most successful doubles player, winning as many as 10 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles. But 2008 has not been the best for Mahesh Bhupathi.after a good start to the year where he along with partner Mark Knowles made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open it has been all downhill.
Bhupathi and knowles crashed out in the 1st round at both the French Open and Wimbledon making it a disappointing outing at the Grand Slams. Then at Beijing a billion people cheered for the Indian express as Hesh and Lee paired up for probably one last time at the Olympics.
But the eventual gold medalists Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka were just too strong for them Bhupathi who won his maiden US Open title in 2002 with Max Mirnyi was looking to improve his dismal record at Flushing Meadows since but failed once again as Juan Monaco and Maximo Gonzalez beat the 4th seeded Bhupathi and Knowles 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Bhupathi has not won a doubles Grand Slam title in the last 6 years and he will need an improved performance to finish the year on a high.
However it was not all bad news for the Indians at the US Open as Leander Paes and his partner Cara Black reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles with a straight sets victory over the Czech pair of Martin Damm and Vladimira Uhlirova. Paes and Black beat Damm and Uhlirova 7-5,6-2.
